Martha “Meg” Gaines, JD, LLM, is a professor and patient advocate working to defend patient rights and teach healthcare professionals from all aspects of care how to do the same.

Gaines and several colleagues founded The Center for Patient Partnerships at the University of Wisconsin. The Center trains students from the schools of law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work to provide advocacy to cancer patients and conducts research about issues relevant to patient perspectives on patient care and healthcare delivery.

In collaboration with colleagues across departments, Gaines teaches a Patient Advocacy course in which students are put in interdisciplinary teams that help cancer patients understand their diagnoses and get the information necessary to make critical treatment decisions and support patient’s efforts to get the treatment they need.
